ROOTS & CULTURE

A Wellness Retreat with WalkGood LA

Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica

July 2 - 7, 2022

Join the WalkGood LA family Etienne Maurice, Ivy Coco and Namaste Marley Rae for a 5 night, 6 day wellness retreat in none other than the island of Jamaica, to experience their roots and culture!  We’ll practice yoga and meditation, discover the unique community of Treasure Beach, explore and swim in the cascading waterfalls at YS Falls, learn to cook the delicious cuisine Jamaica is famous for, and live the “irie”(good) life.

RETREAT LOCATION

When you think about St.Elizabeth, imagine entering the parish on the old road, listening to the rustling leaves of the arches of Holland Bamboo. You can stop on the roadside to savour St.Elizabeth’s favorite street food, hot pepper shrimp, and wash it down with a cool jelly coconut. From the coconut to the coastline, your heart will be captivated by the sweeping views and story of Lover’s Leap. You’ve heard of forbidden love, but nothing like Lover’s Leap. Standing 1,700 feet above sea level, with views of the Manchester and the St.Elizabeth coastline, the legend of Lover’s Leap is about two star-crossed lovers who, rather than be taken from each other by a jealous plantation owner, chose to love eternally and jump to their death.

St. Elizabeth is home to the Accompong Maroons, who are descendents of enslaved West Africans who conquered enslavers and established communities of free black people in Jamaica. Their history of revolution and freedom is deeply woven into their lifestyle, drumming, and ceremonies, a kaleidoscope of art, spirituality and culture. Spirits and spirituality go hand in hand in every Jamaican household. Whether it’s used as a healing remedy, to cast off evil spirits, or to spice up your favorite cocktail, the best aged dark rum is created at the Appleton Rum Estate in Siloah. Appleton Estate is authentic Jamaican rum that seduces the senses and inspires the soul. The heart and soul of St.Elizabeth parish is their ability to produce 22% of the national domestic food needs, which makes them the “Bread Basket” of the country.

The power of St.Elizabeth lies in its people. From their fishermen and farmers who are well-known for their friendly ways and intimate knowledge of earth, sky and sea, to their adventurous local guides who provide excursions to the Black River safari and the mid-ocean Pelican Bar. If there is one place the gracious people of St. Elizabeth would lead you to for rest and relaxation, it’s Jake's Treasure Beach. It's most unusual to find a hotel that functions as the heart of a community. But that’s Jakes—a rustic yet porous place where locals, Jamaicans from around the island, and travelers coming from around the world connect. Treasure Beach isn’t a place you tick off a bucket list, it’s a place you tuck into. Treasure Beach is one big watering hole, a meeting spot made for fellow travelers.

ABOUT WALKGOOD LA

WalkGood LA is a family run non-profit organization that brings people together from all walks of life to fight for racial equity and heal in solidarity through the arts, health, and wellness. Recognizing the need for community healing after the racial strife suffered by Black and brown people in 2020, WalkGood’s founder Etienne Maurice joined forces with his sister the Vice President of WalkGood LA, Ivy Coco and his cousin, Director of Health and Wellness, Marley Ralph to provide a space of healing through community based yoga classes, running groups, hiking, and various wellness activations in the city of LA. WalkGood LA has become a safe haven for Los Angelinos since its inception in June 2020 and has been featured in publications such as the LA Times and BuzzFeed News. WalkGood LA is a devoted homage to their Jamaican heritage and grandmother who always reminded them to “Walk Good,” a Jamaican euphemism, meaning good fortune, safe travels, and well being.
